I have suffered unemployment in Nigeria and it is not funny at all. Compared to the amount of unemployed young people in Nigeria, jobs are very scarce. Let’s admit it, Life is a Mess sometimes. So, here a few things to Expect When You’re Unemployed in Nigeria.
Like me, there are thousands of Nigerian citizens that have found themselves in the unfortunate period of unemployment. Maybe you can relate because you are unemployed right now or you have been unemployed at some point before. Either way, this post highlights the things to expect when you are in a time like this.
UNEMPLOYMENT WILL LEAVE YOU BROKE
It’s normal to not have money when you don’t have a job. Don’t sulk and wail about the lack but try to see what works during these times. Manage, reduce expenses and seek for alternative sources of income.
JOB ALERTS EVERYWHERE!
You will receive all types of job alerts from everybody that cares and sometimes, it will not even be in your range of search. Don’t get angry or frustrated, they love you and want only the best for you. Just sieve out what works for you and appreciate them for the rest.
YOU ARE ALONE
People will act like they care for you. Stories will be shared amongst friends and unemployment might even bring new networks. That’s alright but have it at the back of your mind that when it’s time to write your cover letter, you cannot copy your friend’s own.
EMPLOYERS WILL TAKE YOU FOR GRANTED
They definitely will. What may look like a good opportunity might just be a trap for you. It is the duty of the Human Resource Manager to save the company a couple bucks where possible. He/She will try to offer you less than they can afford. Research as much as you can. Know your skills and walk in there with your head held high. Don’t let someone make you an intern when you deserve to be a manager.
