Ever feel like there’s a streak of bad things happening to a good person like you? Yeah! Some days are like that. You stop and ask yourself “What have I done wrong”. But wait… is it really the only thing happening to you or are you choosing to only see those bad things unfold? Learning to be grateful can be hard especially with so many sad things happening at the same time.
2020 has been a mix of a lot of sour tastes. The world has lost heroes, we’ve been through a pandemic that doesn’t seem to want to leave. It’s safe to say that a lot of us are tired and maybe even scared to be happy. You never know what’s going to spoil your mood next.
If I have learnt anything in the past years, it’s that we create our lives. You choose the life you want to live and how you want to live it too. I can say that learning to be grateful will be one of the best life hacks you will find.
WHY SHOULD I LEARN TO BE GRATEFUL?
I can give loads of reason why this can easily be a better choice than sulking over the horrible things happening in your life but let’s be real. What can something as little as gratitude do to your daily life? A lot of personal growth writers talk about how gratitude affects us greatly and maybe they’re right.
Before I tell you why you should learn to be grateful, let me give you a little story about myself. In 2015, I was depressed about my life. Nothing was going the way I planned and I got frustrated being and feeling stuck about almost everything I was doing. One day, I picked up an old book I got in 2014 but never read. It was “The Secret“. This was the book that changed my perspective on how my life was. It made me realize that I was sowing seeds of negativity and I needed to be more grateful for the things that I already have instead of fixating all my energy on my failures and disappointments.
It didn’t take me two minutes to start spitting positivity tho. I spent a few more months, maybe even years, cultivating that habit and up till now, I still slip on some days when I feel like the weight is too much.
Over the years, I have tried different methods of staying grateful. You’ll see a couple of methods that help but keeping a journal and using the Gratitude App are definitely at the top of my list of things to do when learning to be grateful.
HAPPIER DAYS LIE IN GRATITUDE
That’s it really! You are surely going to be brighter and happier when you start to count your blessings instead of counting your failures. On some days this will be easier because you’ll have so many good reasons to smile but what happens when that changes? Do you forget about all your good days because you’ve had a bad one?
In 2017, it was harder for me to be grateful for anything. I had lost two very important people in my life in the space of 1 month and nothing made sense to me. Trust me when I say nothing made sense at all. I started every day to count my blessings. At that time, all I could think of being grateful for were life and provision. Slowly, I started to see that I smiled more and then more things added to my gratitude list.
I know this all sounds so easy. I know it’s not, too. We always have to start somewhere if we must reach our goals of personal growth. To be happier we must be appreciative and grateful for the little things we have today.
